[ The water shimmers in a band around Hei's arm: the torn skin tingles, a localized zone of knitting flesh, the gash melting away before his eyes to leave a puffy pink mark. A dim part of Hei wonders: Why does she care? It makes no sense why she's healing him. Why she'd followed him at all. The nature of Contractors -- all Contractors -- is to use, not to aid. So what's her game? Is she angling for something -- cash, protection, favors? Does she have an agenda that she believes could coincide with his -- so it's better to join forces? ]
[ A side of him whispers that maybe she isn't up to anything at all -- but that gets lost when the part of him (the same part that automatically maps out exits when he enters a room) scoffs. He can figure out her motives later. What matters is what is happening now. ]
