[Mako usually doesn't bother coming home early, even when he gets the chance. In fact, he generally avoids it. Living alone with your ex-girlfriend (an ex simply because she doesn't remember ever being his girlfriend) is awkward. And uncomfortable. [He's rushing up the stairs and towards her voice without a second thought. It doesn't matter how awkward things are between them, he won't hesitate to act if she's in trouble. Though he may want to start verifying that she's actually in trouble.]

[ Oh. Worse than a lightweight. A fucking teetotaler. ]

[ Even so, Hei keeps any hint of disdain off his face. Everyone has their own addictions, and it's no dirty secret that they're so prevalent because they're enjoyable. No one gets addicted to doing their taxes or eating their lima beans. You get addicted to things that bring you something -- respite, pleasure, distraction, oblivion. The danger comes when you choose that over the longer term consequences. ]

[ He tries not to think about it. Or to allow his mind to go through a checklist of all the ways this boy -- straight as an arrow and boring to a fault -- is nonetheless more suitable to Korra than Hei himself will ever be. Safer, more benign, at least. Instead he tips a shoulder, a dismissive Suit your own damn self, and finishes placing his order. ]

[ Settling back, he tucks an arm under his head. Reaches out after a moment, and then cards the fingers of the other hand through Korra's hair, almost as if he's degenerated to a point where he is unwilling to pass up any indulgence. Everything is to be savored, without discrimination or judgment of suitability -- because he has no idea how long the mellow atmosphere will last. In this room, in his own head. ]

[Mako doesn't stick around to watch Hei pet Korra, or how she leans into his touch. He doesn't want to see how damn happy she looks, now that pleasure no longer drowns out the pain. It's so stupidly clear that she loves him, It's like she's been telling him all along — she isn't the Korra he knows. She's been through so much that he wasn't there for, but Hei has. It connects them in a way he'll never be able to touch.]

I'm going to the bathroom.

[Yeah, yeah, go to the bathroom, Mako. Korra's just going to be lying here, all but purring as Hei strokes her hair. She kisses his wrist when it gets close enough.]

[ Hei watches Mako stomp off to the bathroom, trailing a sulky cloud behind him. It's easy enough to guess the reason behind it. Hei doesn't particularly care, but now that he's alone with Korra -- truly alone -- something makes his stomach clench with a faint, shameful queasiness. He isn't sure when he'd lost his instinct for self-protection, but he is getting more careless, and maybe more vulnerable, when it comes to being around her. He's telegraphing subtexts, secret messages, that he'd once been so good at concealing. ]

[ Forcibly, he shakes his head clear. He'll worry about it -- whatever It is -- later. Korra's question makes him blink slowly, a quiet turn of lazy contemplation. ]

Good. But ... [ A beat, in which something in his chest flutters, and he considers how much to reveal. Eventually, with a mental Fuck it, ] It's better when I have you to myself.

[ Candid but not necessarily blunt. He wants her to feel the way he's seldom successful at treating her: as precious, and singular, like the shining little light she is. But he also means, It's complicated enough between two people without tossing a third into the mix. ]

Yeah. [It was great fulfilling her personal fantasy, but she wouldn't want it all the time. Too much coordination, too much pausing and adjusting and acclimating. She likes the intimacy and flexibility of one-on-one.] But it was nice trying something new.

They've done something that seems irrevocable, half-impulsive, half-planned. Worse, a point he's been circling around in his head has suddenly drawn him in, collapsing his careful distance. ]

[ Yet, sifting through his internal layers, he can't tell if anything's really shifted. Touched, altered. It is hard to distinguish. Points, angles, minute details -- do they matter? Things rarely look different when you're this close, even after great change. ]

[Has anything really changed between them? Korra wouldn't think so. Between her and Mako, yes, but she & Hei have always pushed sexual boundaries together. This is just an extension of that.
